Giving constructive feedback to your video editor is not just for an enjoyable experience but also important to creating quality videos. This isn’t just about saying what you like or don’t like; it’s about guiding your editor to ensure your final video aligns perfectly with your vision and brand.

Let’s start with some traditional advice…

Articulate Emotional Reactions

When you’re reviewing a cut, focus on how it makes you feel. Which parts resonate with you, and which ones don’t? Avoid vague feedback like “I don’t like this.” Instead, be specific about what’s working and what isn’t, and why.

Pacing and Timing

If something feels off with the pacing, point it out. Use timecodes to reference specific parts. We use Dropbox which will actually timestamp comments at that point in the video. Maybe a section drags too long, or a crucial point needs more time to breathe.

Prioritize Your Feedback

Keep in mind that when you get rough cuts from your video editor, more than likely those videos lack elements that will be there in the final video. Don’t just criticize not having those right now. Start with the big-picture issues that impact your brand or the core message. It’s easy to get caught up in the small details, but remember, the overall impact is what counts.

Trust the Technical Expertise

You know your brand best, but your editor knows video editing. Share your vision and preferences, but allow them some creative leeway, especially with technical aspects like shot sequencing and transitions. If you see something that you consider “bad editing” instead of criticizing, ask questions. Try to understand their reasoning as to why they did it that way. You may find that they’re doing it for a specific reason.

Share Inspirations: If you haven’t yet, take your example videos and explain what aspects you like or dislike to help them in creating your videos. It’s much better to visually communicate your ideas especially when you have specific expectations.

Be Open to New Approaches

Sometimes, the initial plan doesn’t pan out. If the plan isn’t working, be open to trying a different creative direction. Fresh perspectives can lead to breakthroughs.

Optimize for Platforms

If you haven’t yet, specify the primary platform for your video. A TikTok audience expects something different from YouTube viewers. This helps your editor optimize the overall video accordingly

Use Data to Inform Edits

If you have data on past video performances or customer analytics, share it. This information can help your editor understand what resonates with your audience and tailor the content accordingly. So for example if you have 5 key benefits to your product and you know which of those 5 are more important, share that with your editor so they can also prioritize those.

This isn’t always the case but I’m going to give you some common phrases that if you find yourself making to your editor, re-consider your feedback. With exceptions, these just really aren’t helpful

“Make it Pop”

This is a classic but vague request. What does “pop” mean? More color? More dynamic transitions? Without specific guidance, an editor is left guessing.

“I’ll Know It When I See It” or “Can We Try Several Different Ways?”

This puts the editor in a tough spot, trying to hit a moving target. It’s more helpful to provide clear examples or a detailed description of what you’re looking for. Also know that if you’re preference is to see your options to know what’s right then you need to be willing to pay for the lots of options to be shown you. By the way, this will burn out a video editor. If you go this approach, hire multiple editors.

“Just Do What You Think is Best”

While this sounds like you’re giving creative freedom, it can be a bit of a trap. Editors prefer some direction to ensure the final product aligns with your expectations.

“It Needs Something… More”

This is too ambiguous. More excitement? More information? More visual effects? Specificity is key in communication.

“Can We Try Several Different Ways?”

While exploring options is part of the process, asking for multiple versions for comparison can be time-consuming and inefficient. It’s better to discuss and agree on a direction before diving into editing.

“It Doesn’t Look Quite Right, But I Can’t Explain Why”

This can be frustrating for an editor. Try to pinpoint what element feels off – is it the color, the pacing, the shot selection?

“Just Fix It in Post”

This phrase is often used to brush off problems during filming, but not everything can be fixed in post-production. It’s important to get as much right during the shoot as possible.

“It Needs to Be More Viral”

Making a video “viral” isn’t just about the editing; it’s about the content, the marketing strategy, and often, a bit of luck. Focus on making the video engaging and true to your brand.

“Can We Make It Like This Video?”

While taking inspiration from successful content is fine, trying to replicate a video’s success isn’t always practical or authentic to your brand.

“Just Speed It Up/Slow It Down”

Pacing is crucial in video editing, and changes can affect the entire feel of the video. Be clear about which sections need pace adjustments and why.

Remember, clear and specific communication can make the difference between an okay video and a great one. It’s all about collaborating effectively with your editor to bring your vision to life.

Socialize Video

<meta property="og:description" content="Giving constructive feedback to your video editor is not just for an enjoyable experience but also important to creating quality videos.
