Previously, we discussed where to find your video professional. Now, let’s focus on crafting an effective job posting and, importantly, how to interpret the responses to select the right person for your project. <\/p>\n

Remember, we’re targeting a solo freelance videographer for your project, not a full production team \u2013 that’s in another video<\/p>\n

Creating Your Job Posting<\/h3>\n

Your job posting isn’t just a call for applications; it’s the first step in a matchmaking process. It’s about finding that one freelance videographer who can not only shoot your video but also bring your vision to life.<\/p>\n

Here are the key things you\u2019ll want in your posting. Again, below this video we provid the text that you can copy and use:<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong>: Start with a brief overview of your company and the project. This sets the stage and helps videographers understand if they’ve tackled similar projects before.<\/p>\n

Rates Inquiry<\/strong>: Ask for their full-day and half-day rates.<\/p>\n

Recent Work<\/strong>: Request a link to their last project.<\/p>\n

Portfolio Request<\/strong>: Ask for a sample of their best work.<\/p>\n

Equipment Details<\/strong>: Inquire about the equipment they own.<\/p>\n

Filming Style and Approach<\/strong>: Understand their typical style and preferences.<\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s talk about evaluating their responses.<\/p>\n

Rate Responses<\/h3>\n

Are their rates reasonable and within your budget? Remember, the lowest rate isn’t always the best option. You are looking to balance cost with their quality. “If they don’t specify whether their pricing is for a full or half-day, assume it’s for a full day. Don\u2019t be surprised if some get back to you with only a full-day rate. Many won\u2019t consider half-day work because even if they work half of a day for you, it\u2019s tough to find work to fit the other half. <\/p>\n

While we\u2019re on this topic, if you were hoping to find someone for just a couple of hours of work note that most don\u2019t work on an hourly rate. If they do, don\u2019t be surprised if it\u2019s really high, like attorney high. It\u2019s better for you to add things to fill to your day and just pay a full-day rate.<\/p>\n

Reviewing Portfolios<\/h3>\n

Look for diversity in their work, attention to detail, and alignment with the style you’re aiming for. So I specifically ask them for a link to their more recent work and link to a video they consider their best work. This can tell you a lot about that person. With recent you can see what kind of work they\u2019re typically doing. So if they\u2019re out shooting the local soccer league that may mean they\u2019re good getting actions shots!<\/p>\n

When you see what they consider their best work then that usually means the type of work they love doing or are most passionate about. Does it resonate with your project’s tone and objectives?<\/p>\n

Equipment Check<\/h3>\n

Their equipment list can reveal a lot about their professionalism and quality of what will come from their camera. Some may provide a lengthy equipment list, which can be overwhelming. Hopefully they at least organize it well for you.<\/p>\n

What you\u2019re going to do is a google search for their main camera. Find out how much it costs. So if the camera retails for under $1,000 then they\u2019re probably still an amateur. If it\u2019s $2,000 – $5,000 then they\u2019re probably a semi-pro. If it\u2019s $10,000 and more then you\u2019re looking at someone with professional capabilities. Keep in mind that what you\u2019ll often find is just the base camera price. There are a whole bunch of other accessories that get attached to make the camera work and this is called a camera-kit.<\/p>\n

You can also put any of their equipment into a Youtube search and you\u2019ll get plenty of videos that will help you figure out what they\u2019re used for and how they fit on the quality scale. So for example if you find a video of a video professional talking about his camera, the camera you searched, and how it uses it create his videos and those videos are exactly what you\u2019re wanting then you have a potential fit.<\/p>\n

Style and Approach<\/h3>\n

Do their preferred style and approach match the dynamics of your project? Are they adaptable to your specific needs? If they explain that they typically work alone and are used to doing specific types of filming, is that a fit for you. Or if they say they love working with other local professionals then they maybe a good team player and they maybe able to connect you with those other people for your project, if that makes sense.<\/p>\n

References<\/h3>\n

You may chose to ask for a persons references. These can be past clients or others that can vouch for their professionalism. Asking them now maybe too premature. If you feel like they\u2019re a top canidate then ask for references and check up with them. When you do call them, a key question to ask is whether their project was delivered on time and on budget.<\/p>\n

Insurance<\/h3>\n

Another optional item to ask is whether they have general liability and equipment coverage so that if they come into a space and have a problem, insurance will take care of it.<\/p>\n

Next Steps<\/h3>\n

Once you’ve crafted your job posting, it’s time to put it out there. Use the platforms we discussed previously like Craigslist and Upwork and wait for the responses to roll in. Consider having an assistant compile all responses into a single document for easy reference. Anyone not willing to answer your questions or that just spits out a canned response, just throw out.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re solely doing a google search to find your video professional, consider creating a free Google Form that you can ask the people you find to fill out. Usually you can send it through to their Contact form or email you find on their website. This way is a bit more selective. You find a person and their website and look at their example videos. If you like them, then you ask them to answer your questions.<\/p>\n

A Note on Video Editing<\/h3>\n

Consider separating the filming and editing parts to your project. Many videographers excel in shooting but may not be the best editors. They\u2019ll be out filming a lot and push of doing the editing that needs to get done. It can easily add weeks and months to your project timeline.
