Note: This guide is made and dated at December 2022 (Adobe 2023). As how technology advances these days, some information might be outdated in the future.

It’s preferable that you have a desktop computer system with the core processing, ram and hard drive space that you can quickly and efficiently work and render projects.

Some laptops can be powerful enough but usually don’t have the capacity needed. You may consider an eGPU to go with your laptop to give you the graphics speed.

You’ll need at a minimum 2TBs of hard drive space to hold client project files (can be less for an illustrator/designer). This hard drive or set of hard drives can be external but has to be connected to the Dropbox app for syncing.

It’s okay if you have spin drives as long as you have fast speed through a RAID system. However SSD drives have come down in price that it’s better to go with an SSD. In fact you can combine two 1TB SSDs to make a fast 2 TB drive.

Keep in mind that when rendering it was good to have a hard drive dedicated to a certain function. So one SSD for your systems operating software, one drive for all your footage assets, and one drive for scratch media files. This isn’t always practical but something to consider for those that build their own PC machines

PC AMD Ryzen

PC Intel

Mac

Motherboard

B450 / B550 / B660

X470 / X570 / X670

B560 to B660

Z590 to Z790

–

Processor (CPU)

Ryzen 7 or 9

(3rd – 7th Gen)

i7 or i9

(11th Gen – 13th Gen)

M1 Pro or

M1 Ultra

Cooler

AIO 240mm-360mm / Tower CPU Fan

AIO 240mm-360mm / Tower CPU Fan

–

Memory (RAM)

(2x16GB) 32GB

(2x32GB) 64GB

DDR4 (3200MHz – 5333MHz)

DDR5 (4800MHz-6000MHz)

(2x16GB) 32GB

(2x32GB) 64GB

DDR4 (3200MHz – 3600MHz)

DDR5 (4800MHz-6000MHz)

32GB

Main Drive

M.2 1TB

M.2 1TB

1TB and up

SSD/HDD (Socialize Drive)

2TB

(the higher the better)

2TB

(the higher the better)

External SSD/HDD

GPU

Nvidia 3060 and up

AMD 5700 XT and up

Nvidia 3060 and up

AMD 5700 XT and up

–

PC AMD Ryzen

PC Intel

Mac

Motherboard

B450 / B550 / B660

X470 / X570 / X670

B460 to B660

Z490 to Z790

–

Processor (CPU)

Ryzen 5 or up

(3rd – 7th Gen)

i5 or up

(10th Gen – 13th Gen)

M1 and up

Cooler

AIO 120mm-360mm / Tower CPU Fan / Stock Cooler

AIO 120mm-360mm / Tower CPU Fan / Stock Cooler

–

Memory (RAM)

(2x8GB) 16GB

(2x16GB) 32GB

DDR4 (3200MHz – 3600MHz)

DDR5 (4800MHz-6000MHz)

(2x8GB) 16GB

(2x16GB) 32GB

DDR4 (3200MHz – 3600MHz)

DDR5 (4800MHz-6000MHz)

16GB

Main Drive

SSD or M.2 512GB or 1TB

SSD or M.2 512GB or 1TB

512GB

SSD/HDD (Socialize Drive)

1TB or Optional

1TB or Optional

Optional

GPU

Nvidia 1660Ti and up

AMD 5600 XT and up

Nvidia 1660Ti and up

AMD 5600 XT and up

–

If your computer system struggles with rendering, it can slow down your workflow and limit your ability to work on other tasks. To address this issue, we recommend using Adobe Media Encoder. By setting all your completed projects to render at once after work hours or during breaks, you can avoid work interruptions. It’s important to note that we do not track rendering time in our timesheets. If you find yourself waiting for a render to finish, you can use that time to take a break away from your computer or watch a training video. This would be tracked as “training.”To further optimize your workflow and reduce render times, we recommend taking steps to optimize your projects before rendering.

Upload and downloading files is also something we don’t count on timesheets. Because you have your own Dropbox folder to hold your project folder, you can have this folder set to auto sync. When a new project is given to you, or while project files are being uploaded elsewhere, files are downloading to your computer. This is also another reason why a desktop is useful–it can be uploading and downloading while your away.

This also works well when you set your system to render at the end of the day. Your files can automatically upload once rendered and you’re away from your computer. When you do this, please ensure that you check your project files really well before rendering to be sure there aren’t any glaring mistakes. Also, consider checking your uploaded files the next chance you can to ensure they are correct. Not double-checking can lead to long turnaround times and unhappy clients.

Because of the size of our project files, having a strong upload/download speed can be very helpful. If you have the option to upgrade your internet, please do so that you can easily download and upload.

If power goes down often in your area, you should consider purchasing a backup battery where you can plug your computer and internet so that it continues to work for a short period (or long) and so you don’t lose your work.

Short-term: UPS

Desktop Computer Vs Laptop
